“A secret passage?” Envy breathed, digging her fingers into my bicep. “Are you kidding me? Oh wow, this is the best day of my life. I had no idea when I woke up this morning I would be living in a Sherlock Holmes novel. Eat your heart out, Becca Daniels!”

“Who’s Becca Daniels?” Sloth asked.

“Third-grade teacher,” Envy answered. “She thinks she’s hot stuff because she has 10,000 followers on Instagram. It’s just because she likes to show off her—”

“Quiet.” I brought a finger to my lips and disentangled from Envy as I stepped into the darkness. The hallway was cool and damp and smelled of algae, decay, and saltwater. Up ahead, the hallway met another hallway, forming an intersection. We appeared to be in some kind of tunnel network, connecting unfinished passages beneath Old Downtown. Everything around us was stone or concrete, and as soon as the door behind us closed, we were plunged into total darkness. Wrath pulled out his cellphone and activated its flashlight.

That’s when we noticed this side of the door had no lock. And no handle for that matter.

“This has to be some kind of joke,” Wrath said, cursing under his breath. “Are we trapped down here? Can we get back inside?”

Sloth placed a hand on Wrath’s shoulder and squeezed. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” she said. “Come on. Let’s find whatever we came down here to find.”

She pushed Wrath forward with a comforting smile. But I saw the way her lips trembled when his back was turned.

Quietly, we padded down the corridor, hardly daring to breathe. At the first intersection, I looked both ways and then placed my right hand on the wall. “Right-hand turns only,” I instructed. “As long as I keep contact with the wall, we should find a way out. I think,” I amended under my breath.

“Where do you think we are?” Sloth whispered. Her voice echoed through the underground. “We’re not underneath Déjà Brew anymore.”

“Definitely not,” Wrath said. “We seem to have stumbled into some kind of underground railroad. I had no idea something like this would exist in California.”

“There are tunnels just like these underneath Los Angeles,” I said, keeping my voice low and my hand on the wall as we walked. “They were originally used for streetcars, safer ways to transport money between banks, and finally for bootleggers. The tunnels are mostly unmapped, so they’re not really safe to use. But they still exist today.”

“I wonder if this tunnel system was part of the original mission,” Envy mused. “Do you think anyone even knows they’re here?”

“Someone knows,” I said. “That’s why the door we just went through was both hidden and locked. You wouldn’t want anyone to sneak into your business via these tunnels. I assume Felix knows. And if he does, others do.” I thought about Envy’s equation about secrets. Old Downtown consisted of three different streets. If half the proprietors in the area knew about the tunnels…well, you do the math.

“Look,” Sloth said, pointing. “A door.
